Jimenez investigated the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming; at the time, the murder was presented as a case of a young gay college student killed by homophobic rednecks, and was used to drive national discourse and policy in favor of gay rights. The truth was, apparently, far darker and stranger.
