In this episode, we review an incredible book, Christened With Crosses by Eduard Kochergin, a Soviet theater artist. As a child, he was placed in an NKVD orphanage for the children of enemies of the people and spent a decade in the 40s and 50s in a series of escapes, crossing the USSR from East to West in an attempt to reunite with his family which was ultimately successful. His book, which details his travels in the middle of a true 20th century Volkswanderung, is a very valuable document from the literary, historic and ethnographic perspectives. The Russian original is available online here.
