Rabbi Doctor Slifkin pivots to Levantine primatology
Our Anglo-American diaspora, in large part, is able to afford the luxury of living in a parallel reality Israel. If you come here at an advanced enough age, with a profession in hand which allows you to make a living without entering the Israeli job market too deeply, you can spend many decades in a bubble, where the only Hebrew you really need to speak involves ordering a bagel with cream cheese once in a while. Raanana, Modiin, Efrat and Beit Shemesh are big enough that you can even have your menial labor performed by native English speakers. This is all good and well, but leads to hilarious results when Anglo influencers encounter what is, for 95% of us, mundane daily reality. One of my favorite works in this genre was when, after a decade of living in Israel, Doctor Martindale the Nonzionist went to Tel Aviv and discovered the old Central Bus Station (“it’s…it’s…am I in Port Said?!”) Rabbi Doctor Slifkin’s recent efforts, where he discovers the existence of Ben Gvir and the arsim who vote for him, are even better.

In summary: Ben Gvir is a cretin who has been pushing an idiotic plan, to wit, digging moats around the prisons which hold terrorist prisoners and filling them (the moats) with crocodiles. This is not going to be good for the crocodiles, who will likely be mismanaged by the dimwits of the Israeli Prison Service, and it won’t help prevent escapes, because crocodiles spend most of their lives lying around not being interested in anything. The Jerusalem court has issued an injunction, giving Ben Gvir the opportunity to accuse them of being terrorist sympathizers. Ben Gvir’s idiot ars voters are eating it up.
Cost to the Israeli taxpayer so far: twenty one MILLION shekel!
Let’s take all of this in context. First of all, how much is twenty one million shekel in terms of the GOI’s budget? We live in a post-socialist state; those of us who work are taxed at something like a 40% effective tax rate. All of this money has to go somewhere, and much or most of it is wasted. Example: something like 5,000 people a year live on disability due to addiction to drugs and alcohol. This costs something like 200 million shekel a year (not counting their medical treatment, the externalities their criminal lifestyle inflicts on others, etc.)
But the care and feeding of our worthless dope fiends is a drop in the bucket. The GOI spent several BILLION shekel on the COVID vaccines, which Doctor Slifkin supported in the strongest terms and, presumably, still supports. Vaccine advertising costs alone ran in the hundreds of millions of shekel. How effective was the thing they were promoting, according to the main guy driving the global initiative? Let’s look in Doctor Fauci’s diary:
Anyway, forget about the money. What’s the game? What is Ben Gvir up to? Is he demented? Does he just have a crocodile fetish? Is he repackaging stuff he saw on Looney Tunes when he was a kid 40 years ago as political initiatives? What does he want?
If you are not locked in an Anglo bubble, the answer to these questions is obvious. Ben Gvir is not retarded. His game is very simple. He performs political performance art to troll his opponents, then uses their reactions to mobilize his base, which gives him the leverage to enact the actual measures he wanted all along. This has been the case for a long time. For instance, 15 years ago, he, Michael Ben Ari and Baruch Marzel paid for a group of the Sudanese migroids with whom the Israeli left had flooded the poor Mizrahi neighborhoods of South Tel Aviv to go to the prestigious Gordon Pool in the affluent leftist stronghold of North Tel Aviv. Hilarity ensued:
Leftist outrage then amplifies whatever he invested in the performance art, increasing its reach and providing leverage. People spend weeks and months discussing it. Ben Gvir’s ars constituency, which perhaps doesn’t care much about the initial performance art (very few people are passionate about crocodile moats,) is mobilized by the extended reaction of its class enemies (the secular leftist Ashkenazim.) In marketing, this is known as virality-the golden grail of every marketer.
Ben Gvir’s voters are, generally, arsim who would otherwise be voting for Likud and Shas, whose political machines work on the Tammany Hall method of turning votes into sinecures and playgrounds in Ofakim and Ashdod, which are then used to secure more votes.
Ben Gvir then takes the seats which he secures from those ars votes and uses them to do the things which he actually entered politics to do, which are far beyond performance art, sinecures or schoolhouses in Hadera, and create massive benefits for the Jewish people. To wit:
Turning Israeli jails from resorts for terrorists, with luxurious food in unlimited quantities, de facto sovereignty, jailers providing the inmates with female Jewish conscript soldiers for sex, subsidized university degrees, into true places of punishment and suffering. The result: released prisoners, looking like death, explaining to their audience that Israeli jail is NOT a place you want to go. This creates deterrence, and is in part responsible for the collapsing rate of terror attacks since the beginning of the war. That means fewer Jews killed, maimed, traumatized and humiliated.
Issuing hundreds of thousands of gun licenses to Jews, doubling pistol ownership. This means that, when the Arabs on either side of the Green Line decide to engage in their traditional Wretched of the Earth behavior, that is, assault, rape, carjacking, robbery, running over Jews waiting at the bus stop, stabbing Jews, shooting Jews and so on, there are now twice as many Jews who have more effective means of self defense than throwing a plastic chair at them. Martin Luther King Jr. said that a riot is the language of the unheard. I say that there is a reason that they were unheard in the first place and that we should have the tools to make sure it stays that way.
Creating a thousand kitot konenut (community rapid response teams,) putting ten thousand new Arad rifles in their hands, and providing them with training. On October 7th, the security system was paralyzed. In every Jewish community where there was a functioning, armed kitat konenut, it was able to fight off Hamas attackers despite overwhelming odds, and spare its members torture, massacre, rape and enslavement. The communities whose kitot konenut had been disarmed by the IDF or were not able to mobilize and draw weapons suffered a fate unknown to the Jews since the Holocaust. Since the security system is currently doing what it does best, namely, attempting to return to its status quo slumber, the fate of the Jews during the next October 7th will depend mostly on their communal defense capabilities.
For an upper middle class Anglo who can afford to have other people take care of his necessities and insulate himself from the majority of his fellow Israelis, none of the above is a reality; to the degree that he is aware of it, it is in the abstract. But Israel is a place where the abstract becomes concrete, unexpectedly and in very tangible ways. While Ben Gvir’s Looney Tunes political theater is not my bag of tea, and while I have nothing against the children of Dimona and Hadera and certainly do not begrudge them their playgrounds, I value Jewish life and limb much more, and appreciate his efforts. Pearl clutching aside, the man has achieved tremendous things for all of us, and I wish to see him increase his achievements.

I like an article that gives a perspective I was not aware of, challenging the consensus and pulling people out of the echo chamber. So thanks for this excellent post. (And reading the Slifkin article and others like it in this light is hilarious!)
That said, don't you think his PR stunts are also really damaging to Israel's global standing? Which IMO are pretty important. Perhaps more damaging than the good he's gotten done...
Curious to hear your thoughts.
Two things can simultaneously be true:
1. Ben Gvir really is a dangerous, hateful fanatic who behaves like a talking ape and his behavior is an embarrassment
2. We are soooooo lucky to have him
Ben Gvir: The hero Israel deserves, not the one it needs
